Plan a Local, Large-Scale Planting Project

If you are dreaming of uniting your community and Rotarians from around the world to make your community and our world a little more green, please consider helping us develop a local MPP. This page has a planning guide and a section at the bottom to apply for help in planning and executing your planting project.

Thank you in advance for your love and hard work!

The Following plan may seem daunting, but we are here to help you and to try to find you local volunteers to assist with the planning and execution of a sustainable Local Tree Planting Project.

Step-by-step guide for Rotary Clubs interested in developing a Local MPP:

  1. Motivate Your Local Rotary Club:

    • Present the Vision: Share the goals and objectives of the Rotary Fellowship of the Trees with your club members, emphasizing the positive impact of tree planting on the environment and the opportunity to contribute to a global movement.

    • Highlight Local Needs: Discuss local environmental challenges and identify potential tree-planting sites that could benefit from the project (e.g., parks, schools, community gardens, degraded areas).

    • Showcase the Rotary Connection: Emphasize how this project aligns with Rotary's core values of service, friendship, and international cooperation.

  2. Build Partnerships:

    • Identify Stakeholders: Seek partnerships with other Rotary Clubs in the region, local government agencies (e.g., parks and recreation departments, forestry departments), environmental organizations, schools, and community groups.

    • Planning and Execution:

      • Identify Planting Site: Conduct site assessments to determine suitable locations for tree planting, considering factors such as soil conditions, access, and environmental impact.

      • Determine Tree Species: Identify the target number and type(s) of trees to be planted, considering factors such as site suitability, environmental benefits (e.g., shade, erosion control, wildlife habitat), price, and local regulations.

      • Set a Budget: Develop a realistic budget for the project, including costs for trees, planting materials, tools, equipment, permits, insurance, and any other necessary expenses.

      • Develop a Timeline: Create a project timeline with clear milestones and deadlines for key activities, such as site selection, tree procurement, volunteer recruitment, and planting events.

  3. Develop a Tree Care Plan:

    • Long-Term Sustainability: Create a comprehensive plan for the long-term care and maintenance of the planted trees, often including:

      • Watering schedules

      • Fertilization plans

      • Pest and disease control measures

      • Mulching and weeding

      • Ongoing monitoring and evaluation

    • Community Involvement: Explore opportunities for ongoing community involvement in the care and maintenance of the trees, such as adopting trees or organizing volunteer workdays.

  4. Seek Funding and Approval:

    • Fellowship Funding Request: Prepare a project synopsis outlining the goals, objectives, budget, and anticipated impact of the project. Submit the synopsis to the Rotary Fellowship of the Trees for funding consideration.

      • Note: Fellowship funding will not exceed $1 per tree, but we can help your team set up a fund drive to try to raise an additional $1 per tree.

    • Seek Additional Funding: Explore opportunities to secure additional funding from other sources, such as local businesses, foundations, and government grants.

  5. Project Announcement and Publicity:

    • Raise Awareness: Announce the project to the public through press releases, social media campaigns, local news outlets, and community events.

    • Recruit Volunteers: Encourage Rotarians, community members, and other volunteers to participate in the planting event.

  6. Conduct the Planting Event:

    • Organize Logistics: Coordinate logistics for the planting event, including transportation, tools, equipment, refreshments, and safety measures.

    • Host a Successful Event: Conduct a safe and enjoyable planting event, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie among participants.

  7. Register Trees and Ensure Follow-Through:

    • Register Trees: Register the planted trees on the Rotary Fellowship of the Trees website, providing details about the project, the number of trees planted, and any relevant photos or videos.

    • Implement the Care Plan: Monitor the health and survival of the planted trees, ensuring that the long-term care plan is implemented effectively.

    • Evaluate and Adjust: Regularly evaluate the project's progress and make adjustments to the care plan as needed.
